Re: Correlationsim and Realism

But I'm not thinking about these associations, I'm thinking by means of them. If I draw a picture of my house, I have to use pencil and paper, lines and colors, but I'm not making a drawing of a drawing of my house. This leads to infinite recursion. Polanyi wrote about this. I'll have to give him a...

Re: Democracy vs. epistocracy

It seems like the US already has a very elegant system for distribution of powers but that unlimited election spending just privileges the wrong kinds of candidates? Smart people already make the decisions, but leaders need to dumb down because that's how media spending shapes the message. ....which...

Meaning of Life: partial transcript from this discussion [Time stamp] [0:00:10] Moderator: What does the word “meaning” denote in the expression, “meaning of life”? [1:24:55] Jordan P eterson: Okay, so that’s two meanings: meaning of “order” - stable / security - it can tilt towards tyranny if it ge...

Re: Techno-Utopianism and the Fate of the Earth

Okay, here's a framework that I worked through with my brother over email (emanating from discussion of the Rushkoff video in the original post): ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Wow, okay so this has been a very engaging conversation for me. I really didn't know where this was going to go and I don't have a p...

Re: What do you think of Islam?

People need some kind of cultural structure as a 'way in' to the sacred. The problem is that the structure tends to follow its own logic as do the people who adopt that structure. The institution tends to become sacred as well, or at least regarded that way. Maybe this isn't all bad and it's probab...

Re: What do you think of Islam?

st, what do you think of this Maggie Ross quote? (She is an Angican "anchorite" - a contemplative in Julian of Norwich's tradition - who also lectures sometimes at Harvard and Oxford.) These problems are but irruptions of a more fundamental problem: in any human population there are those who are f...

Re: Myth as Meth

Btw, perhaps that "magical" thing could be a quantum factor? I dunno ... (I did put a note about the physicist Wolfgang Pauling's influence on CG Jung on that other thread too, for Mag). Maybe this??? https://www.amazon.ca/Quantum-Psychology-Brain-Software-Programs/dp/0692767045/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&...

Techno-Utopianism and the Fate of the Earth

Found a link into the 2014 conference held by the International Forum on Globalization on the topic: Techno-Utopianism and the Fate of the Earth. The talk I listened to was Future Shock by Douglas Rushkoff, but I see a lot of interesting stuff here! http://ifg.org/techno-utopia/full-audio-of-teach-i...

Re: Myth as Meth

I feel the emphasis on "overcoming" our humanity is overwhelming in our culture....except this "overcoming" isn't overcoming of vice, or of suffering, but of *being* through transforming our selves lioke a machine. I'm obviously not remarking on some new idea. I'm just overwhelmed by it. -sgtt Ok.....
